In a stroke of luck, I happened upon an old cache of film that I had shot a few summers past and simultaneously gifted a box of ten unopened, disposable film cameras. It had been almost two years since I had seriously picked up a camera (that wasn’t a cell phone) and I found the freedom to document what was happening around me incredibly freeing.
In highschool, when I learned how to shoot an SLR and develop and print in the darkroom, I literally would not go anywhere with my camera (alternating between film & digital). I’d been spoiled by having a smartphone at hand to capture things and share them instantly. There something important about having a modicum of patience in the creative process, so I picked up the camera again in order to refresh my eye, see differently, and work in another medium in order to inform my other practices.
